Nestled in the rolling hills of Barre, Vermont, lies a hidden gem where the age-old tradition of sugaring came to life recently. This past weekend, I had the privilege of stepping into this sweet world at the Smith family’s sugar shack, a place where the art of maple syrup making is not just preserved but celebrated.
The process of transforming sap into syrup is a ritual deeply rooted in New England’s culture, and experiencing it firsthand was akin to stepping into a living postcard of Vermont’s heritage. The Smiths’ sugar shack, a rustic haven amidst the awakening woods, was thick with the scent of boiling sap, a fragrance that instantly transports one to the heart of the Northeast’s maple groves.
Here’s a few photos from the pretty sweet process.
